The Community HeARTbeat Initiative: Funding the Volunteers in Medicine Multi-Service Center
The Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) model is founded on the principle of holistic care, treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. We are launching a vital capital campaign to establish a first-of-its-kind multi-service center that expands our impact beyond the clinic, creating a true community hub. This new facility will seamlessly blend essential medical and social services with dedicated, accessible arts programming designed to foster healing, connection, and social well-being.
A Vision for Holistic Wellness
While the center will provide core VIM services—free and low-cost primary medical care, dental services, and mental health counseling—its distinguishing feature is the integration of a vibrant community and arts center wing. We recognize that social isolation, stress, and lack of creative outlets are significant barriers to health. By offering a sanctuary for self-expression and community building, the center addresses these challenges directly. This space will act as a preventative and therapeutic tool, ensuring our neighbors have access not just to prescriptions, but to purpose.
The Arts as Essential Medicine
The arts center is designed to be a flexible, welcoming space for all ages and abilities. The facility will feature:
Impact and Call to Action
The Community HeARTbeat Initiative will transform the lives of thousands of underserved individuals annually. By providing a safe space where individuals can receive high-quality medical care in one wing and engage in self-expression and community building in the next, we are setting a new standard for integrated care. Our goal is to reduce hospital readmissions, decrease mental health crises, and, most importantly, create a stronger, more connected, and healthier community.
Your donation is an investment in this revolutionary model. Help us prove that art and community are essential components of comprehensive health care.
Medical and Counties POTTSVILLE, PA – In a groundbreaking move for community health and cultural unity, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is spearheading a strategic alliance to transform the landscape of local support services. This new coalition—comprising Bridges of Support, Allied Artists, Block of Art, The Beverly Mattson Memorial Food Bank and H.E.L.P.—aims to amplify their collective impact by establishing a permanent, multi-service facility in the heart of Pottsville. A Vision for Holistic Wellness This innovative "sanctuary of care and culture" will break down traditional silos by housing medical clinics, social services, a food pantry, and artistic programs under one roof. The mission is to create a neutral, welcoming ground where residents can heal, collaborate, and connect regardless of their background. “Health is about more than physical medicine; it is about community connection and mental well-being,” said Bob Alonge, CEO of Volunteers in Medicine. “By partnering with the arts community, we are creating an environment that is less clinical and more human—a place where patients feel truly seen and supported.” Bridging the Cultural Divide Beyond essential services, the facility will serve as an intercultural hub. By combining healthcare with the creative energy of Allied Artists and Block of Art, the coalition seeks to nurture the spirit of the region. “Art is a universal language,” Alonge added. “We are building a space where residents from every walk of life can share their stories. We aren’t just treating the body; we are nurturing the spirit of our counties.” The Coalition Partners • Volunteers in Medicine (Schuylkill/Carbon): Provides free or low-cost medical care to the uninsured and underinsured. • Bridges of Support: Connects residents facing language or systemic barriers to vital local social services. • The Beverly Mattson Memorial Food Bank : A 100% volunteer-run pantry serving over 1,500 individuals monthly with food and essential household supplies. • H.E.L.P. (Medical Equipment Loaning Program): Provides free medical equipment and supplies to those in need, serving the area for over 20 years. • Allied Artists & Block of Art: Organizations dedicated to local artist support, visual arts education, and community revitalization through public art. Next Steps & How to Get Involved The coalition is currently identifying a central location accessible to residents of both Schuylkill and Carbon counties. Community town halls and further fundraising details will be announced shortly. Save the Date: Join us for a “Collective Fundraiser” on June 20th at The Pottsville Zone .
