Our clinic was born out of a vision for healthcare access for all, regardless of income. In 1994, Dr. Jack McConnell, alongside a group of dedicated medical professionals, established the first Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Since then, the Volunteers in Medicine network has grown to over 90 clinics across the United States, all committed to providing free, high-quality healthcare to those who need it most—especially the working low-income population that lacks access to consistent medical care.
Volunteers in Medicine is a non-profit, community-based organization with a mission to meet the primary healthcare needs of the uninsured and underinsured individuals in Schuylkill and Carbon Counties, Pennsylvania. This vital initiative in our community is spearheaded by Pastors Bob and Renata Alonge of The Community Mission Judeo-Christian Center in Minersville, PA. Their leadership, paired with their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others, ensures that every patient receives not only medical care but compassion and respect.
Our clinic model relies heavily on the dedication of both retired and practicing medical professionals. These volunteers are the backbone of our services, providing essential medical care to those who may otherwise have no access to ongoing healthcare. Their expertise and generosity make Volunteers in Medicine a trusted pillar in our community, offering a wide array of primary and preventative care services to individuals who are typically left behind in the healthcare system.
Our Partnerships: Strengthening Our Mission
Our work wouldn't be possible without the incredible support of our affiliates and donors. Volunteers in Medicine collaborates with leading organizations to enhance the care we provide and extend our reach. We are proud to work alongside partners such as the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Kings College, and others, all of whom contribute to our shared mission of creating healthier communities.
We also have the support of key donors like Lowes, Lehigh Valley Health Network, and Mission Central, who ensure that we can continue offering free, high-quality care to those in need. Our visionary contributors, such as Walmart, make a significant impact on the sustainability of our clinics, helping us provide vital healthcare services to individuals who otherwise wouldn't have access.
Looking to the Future: A Growing Network of Care
Volunteers in Medicine continues to grow, evolving from a single clinic in Hilton Head to a nationwide network of more than 90 clinics, with a specific focus on improving healthcare access for the working uninsured and underinsured populations. We are committed to expanding our services and strengthening our clinic’s infrastructure, and we continue to seek out additional volunteers, partnerships, and donors to support our mission.
As we look toward the future, we remain deeply grateful for the dedication of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the support of our community partners. Together, we are building a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system—one where no one has to go without the care they need. Join us in our mission to provide essential healthcare to those who need it most. Your support, whether through volunteering or donations, helps ensure that the legacy of Volunteers in Medicine continues to thrive for many years to come.
